According to authors/sexologists James Herriot, Ph.D. and Oona Mourier, Ph.D, there are nine distinct personality types that reveal themselves in the bedroom. Their new book, "9 Secrets to Bedroom Bliss: Exploring Sexual Archetypes to Reveal Your Lover's Passions and Discover What Turns You On" (Fair Winds Press) is possibly the most unusual sex manual of late.

"Life, culture and film are full of archetypes," says Herriot. "We thought, what if we applied it to sexuality?"

While there's no mistaking their work with, say, archetypal critic Joseph Campbell's, Herriot and Mourier think their theories will improve anyone's sex life - once they know exactly who they are.

And who, exactly, are you? We asked the good doctors to run through each of the nine archetypes and break down their qualities and characteristics.

INNOCENT

Traits: Looks at everything with wonder. Has an almost virginal quality - everything is new. Open and happy - loves simplicity and hate goals and responsibilities. No body hang-ups. Fully trusting of their partner.

Famous Innocent: Drew Barrymore. "I started thinking, 'Wow, my hair grows out of my head and my legs move back and forth when I want them to . . .' "

ADVENTURER

Traits: Can't refuse a dare - or daring others. Enjoys sex toys, aggression, spontaneity and breaking taboos. Loves all that is considered "forbidden" and revels in shocking others.

Famous Adventurer: Angelina Jolie. "I am so in love with my brother right now" - after kissing him on the red carpet at the 2000 Oscars; wore vial of then-husband Billy Bob Thornton's blood around her neck.

SENSUALIST

Traits: Deeply in touch with all five senses and finds no bodily function embarrassing. Very vocal about what they want, both in and out of bed.

Famous Sensualist: Jessica Simpson, recent purchaser of $1,400 bed sheets, and fan of detailing her bowel movements and husband's obsession with her breasts.

SEEKER

Traits: Turned on by power plays and foot fetishes. Familiar with "the underworld." Loves role playing and thinks sex should be like "good theater."

Famous Seeker: Quentin Tarantino, whose foot fetish is on display in "Pulp Fiction" and "Kill Bill: Vol. 1"; recently reported to have sucked Cameron Diaz's feet.

REVEALER

Traits: Very self-aware - yet tends to say too much, too soon and divulge too much information. Desperately craves intimacy; the first to say how they are feeling at any given moment. Weakness is a sign of strength - so getting dumped can result in righteous anger.

Famous Revealer: Fred Durst. Of rumored liaison with Britney Spears, the Limp Bizkit frontman said, "What I say in my music is very real," then quoted his own lyrics: "Scared to admit it/Very first night made the Limp dog hit it."

MAGICIAN

Traits: Puts aside their own problems to help friends and loved ones with their own dilemmas; tend to be nonjudgmental and intuitively "get" their partners, emotionally and physically. (Also knows where the G-spot is.)

Famous Magician: Susan Sarandon. "I was so old when I started having kids - but when you have children, just to tell them what you believe isn't enough, you have to live it and be able to explain why. I swore I would never say what was said to me, which was, 'That's not nice.' It's . . . lazy."

MYSTIC

Traits: Chakras, meditation and yoga are the top topics of conversation with this personality. In order to make sex last longer, they opt to delay orgasms and "appreciate the journey." Talk about "energy" and "being on the path."

Famous Mystic: Sting. Credits tantric sex for 8-hour-long sessions with his wife, though that often entails "four hours of begging and then dinner and a movie."

NURTURER

Traits: May not have the most erotic sex, but it's comforting. Generous, mellow, tender and snuggly. Will rub your feet after a long day and take care of you when you have food poisoning. Never argumentative, cynical, too busy to listen, or caught up in gossip.

Famous Nurturer: Oprah Winfrey. "What I am, I think, more than anything, is a humanist who is concerned about everyone else being allowed to be a humanist."

ARTIST

Traits: Liberated, wild, versatile and free; can be all of the above at just the right time. Herriot and Mourier preach that we should embody each of the aforementioned archetypes to become the artist - the fluid character who can be anything at any time.

Famous Artist: Madonna. Has gone through incarnations as a virgin, vamp, S&M queen and children's author.
